Backlink

A backlink is a link from another website to yours. Backlinks are a major ranking factor in SEO because they signal to search engines that other sites vouch for your content.

Backlinks are essentially "votes" from other websites. When a reputable site links to your website, it tells Google that your content is valuable and trustworthy.

Why backlinks matter:

Google's algorithm was originally built on the idea that links are endorsements. A page with many quality backlinks is seen as more authoritative than one with few.

Quality vs. quantity:

Not all backlinks are equal. Quality factors include:

1. Authority of linking site
A link from a major industry publication matters more than a link from a random blog.

2. Relevance
Links from related sites (construction industry, home improvement) are more valuable than unrelated sites.

3. Link type
"Dofollow" links pass authority. "Nofollow" links don't, but can still drive traffic.

4. Anchor text
The clickable text of the link. Natural anchor text that describes what you do helps.

5. Placement
Links in main content are more valuable than links in footers or sidebars.

How contractors can earn backlinks:

- Get listed in industry directories

  • Join local business associations
  • Sponsor local events
  • Create valuable content others want to reference
  • Get featured in local news
  • Partner with complementary businesses

Backlink mistakes:

- Buying links (against Google's guidelines)

  • Getting links from irrelevant or low-quality sites
  • Using exact-match anchor text excessively
  • Participating in link schemes
